SCAM ALERT

Back to front page

Bongiorno has recently become aware that a number of our clients have received an email, purportedly from ASIC, instructing them to click on a link to renew their business name. Please be advised that this is a scam. According to the real ASIC website, an email is probably a scam and is not from ASIC if it asks you to:

  • make a payment over the phone

  • make a payment to receive a refund, or

  • supply your credit card or bank details directly by email or phone.

Clicking on the link also runs the risk of infecting your computer with malware.

Scams, of course, take many forms. Scammers may try to lure you with, among other things, the promise of early access to super. Many of these scammers operate through online advertising that promises to put you in touch with a specialist who will help you set up a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) from which, as the fund trustee, you will be able to access your super immediately. The scam involves you signing paperwork to set up the fund, authorising the rollover of your super, but then funnelling the retirement savings into a bank controlled by the scammer.

If you need early access to your super, our advice is to talk to a licensed superannuation advisor. If you ever want to check their credentials, go to ASIC’s list of Australian Financial Service Licence holders.
